Following the first four days of pool play at the 2023 Sitting Volleyball Men’s European Championship, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany proved their strength by coming away undefeated with five wins.
The Bosnians and the Germans advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Italy and Serbia, respectively, at Palamare Valter Vicentini on Thursday.
The Bosnian team logged an easy 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-12) win over the hosts, while the German squad posted a straight-set (25-16, 25-10, 22-25) victory over Serbia.
Both squads involved most of its players in scoring, as Mirzet Duran and Ermin Jusufovic led the way for Bosnia on offence with nine points apiece, while Francis Tonleu and Lukas Schiwy also had nine markers each for Germany.
Losing sides Italy and Serbia still made it to the cast of quarterfinalists as the fourth-ranked teams of their respective group, with two wins and three losses.
Poland edged Croatia to take the second spot in Group A rankings, following the former’s tiebreaker clinching win 3-2 (20-25, 26-24, 25-18, 19-25, 15-12), while Ukraine tightened its stranglehold in Group B’s second place with 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-14) win over Türkiye.
Latvia made the cut as Group A’s third-ranked squad after posting a 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 17-25, 18-16) win over Hungary.
Quarterfinal matchups on Friday will be between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia at 11:45 local time, Poland and Latvia at 12:00, Croatia and Ukraine at 15:30, and Italy and Germany at 15:45.
Placement Group matchups between Hungary and Slovenia will start at 09:00, and Lithuania and Türkiye at 11:30.
