Bruins Drop to Utes in Four Sets

LOS ANGELES – Charitie Luper and élan McCall each recorded double-doubles as the UCLA women’s volleyball team lost, 3-1 (23-25, 18-25, 25-14, 19-25), to Utah in Pauley Pavilion Friday evening.
 
The Bruins (6-6, 0-3 Pac-12) outhit the Utes (9-5, 2-1 Pac-12) .156 to .140 for 48 but totaled 16 service errors compared to Utah’s three. Luper and McCall each tallied 10 kills and 11 and 13 digs, respectively.
 
Middle blocker Anna Dodson racked up nine kills at a team-high .438 clip (min. 5 attempts). Freshman Mokihana Tufono recorded the first 30-assist outing of her career.
 
Utah outside hitter Madelyn Robinson tallied a match-high 13 kills.
 
Utah opened the match against UCLA in a game of runs, first striking with a 4-0 run to lead 12-7 early on. UCLA countered with three straight points, but a 4-1 run for Utah would later break open the lead to 20-14.
 
The Utes came out aggressive early in the second set and suddenly took a 13-5 lead after a 9-1 run. That lead became insurmountable as it expanded to 22-12 despite a late 6-2 Bruin run.
 
The third set wat knotted 12-12 when the Bruins burst out to a 7-0 run with Charitie Luper at the service line. élan McCall went off for three blocks in the set.
