Bruins Fall, 3-1, in Crosstown Showdown

LOS ANGELES – élan McCall and Charitie Luper each recorded double-doubles in the UCLA women’s volleyball team’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of USC at the Galen Center on Friday.

Set scores in the regular-season finale were 22-25, 25-22, 20-25, 21-25.

The Bruins (16-13, 10-10 Pac-12) finished the match with 54 kills at a .142 clip compared to the Trojan’s 56 at .223. USC outside hitter Skylar Fields notched a match-high 23 kills on 71 attempts.

McCall’s team-high 17 kills and 16 digs marked her 10th double-double of the season. She entered 2022 with 10 across her first two seasons as a Bruin.

Mokihana Tufono led UCLA in the assist category with 26 while libero Mackenzie Cole collected a team-high 23 digs. Freshman Grayce Olson also made a solid impact with nine kills and three block assists.

UCLA and USC jockeyed leads in the first set as both Mackenzie Cole and Charitie Luper led 4-0 runs from the service line to put the Bruins out in front, 10-8 and 17-16, respectively. Each of them recorded an ace in their flurries of points. Back-to-back kills from the Trojans’ Jordan Wilson and Kalyah Williams put set point on the line for USC and led to the eventual first-set victory.

The Bruins responded in set two with a 9-2 run out of the gate thanks to solid serving from Cole and Tufono. élan McCall picked up six kills at a .500 hitting percentage in the frame while Olson went 4-for-5 on her attempts. UCLA totaled 18 kills to even the match at a set apiece.

UCLA finished the match hitting sub-.100 in sets three and four. The two squads were tied 20-all in set four with UCLA on the service line and on the verge of forcing a fifth. However, a Bruin service error and blocks by USC’s Adonia Faumuina and Linsey Miller put UCLA in too deep of a hole to dig out of.

Next Up: The Bruins will await to hear their name called in the 2022 NCAA Volleyball Tournament bracket selection show on television. The bracket selection show is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. PT on ESPNU.
