COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes (2-3) earned the sweep (25-19, 25-16, 27-25) against No. 10 BYU (5-3) to open action at the Georgia Tech Classic.
Ohio State used an early run in the first set to lead for its entirety and held off a late BYU run to win 25-19. The second set was tight at the beginning before a 6-0 Ohio State run allowed the Buckeyes to create some distance and take a 2-0 set advantage with a 25-16 set win. BYU tied the third set five times in a row, but OSU held off the Cougars to get the sweep with a 27-25 win in the third set. Ohio State did not trail during the match.
How it Happened
Emily Londot began the match with a kill on her first attempt. Ohio State took an early 6-1 lead to force a BYU timeout following a 4-0 run including a trio of attack errors from the Cougars. The Buckeyes stretched their lead to 8-1 before BYU responded. The Cougars closed the margin to 9-5 before another 4-0 Buckeyes run forced a BYU timeout. Out of the timeout, the teams traded points – aided by a successful BYU challenge. A small 3-0 OSU run allowed the Buckeyes to double up on the Cougars, 20-10. BYU closed the first set on a 7-2 run, but OSU took the first set by a 25-19 mark.
The Buckeyes scored first in the second set on a ball handling error by the Cougars. BYU won its second challenge of the match to make it 3-2 instead of 4-1. Back-to-back Buckeye points gave OSU the 7-4 advantage. The Cougars got back within one at 8-7 and 9-8 before three-consecutive points forced a BYU timeout. OSU extended its run to 6-0 to lead 15-8 on a service ace from Kylie Murr. Back-to-back kills from Gabby Gonzales and Mac Podraza pushed Ohio State’s lead to 19-12 and forced a Cougars timeout. The Buckeyes continued their run at five-unanswered points to lead 22-12. Londot sealed the 25-16 set win with her sixth kill of the match.
Londot once again began the set with a kill as the Buckeyes started with the first four points. BYU scored the next three to get within one, but back-to-back OSU points gave the Buckeyes a bit of a cushion. A service ace from Rylee Rader gave Ohio State the 11-6 advantage and forced a BYU timeout. Out of the timeout, the Cougars scored the next three points to get within two at 11-9 and then within one at 13-12. Back-to-back kills from Jenaisya Moore forced a Cougars timeout as the Buckeyes held the 16-12 lead. BYU tied the set at 17, the first tie since the score was 1-1 at the beginning…
