COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes (6-5, 2-1 B1G) won in four sets (25-22, 25-18, 17-25, 25-21) at RV Michigan (11-2, 2-1 B1G) on Wednesday in the first mid-week match of the season.
The first set was close from wire-to-wire with Ohio State earning the 25-22 set win on back-to-back points. The Buckeyes took control of the second set with a couple early runs and capped a 25-18 set win with three-consecutive points. Michigan won the third set by a 25-17 margin on the back of a pair of runs midway through the set. Ohio State held off a late Michigan surge to win the fourth set by a 25-21 mark.
How it Happened
Gabby Gonzales began the match with a kill, but Michigan took its first lead of the back with back-to-back points. Ohio State regained the lead before the teams traded points, tying at every point until two points from Michigan gave the Wolverines a 9-7 lead. Michigan extended its lead to 11-8 before a 3-0 run from OSU tied the set at 11. The Buckeyes went into the media timeout on a 4-1 run and holding a 15-14 lead. The Wolverines took a 16-15 lead before the Buckeyes went on a 4-0 run amidst a Michigan timeout to lead 19-16. UM got back within one at 20-19 before the teams alternated scoring. Gonzales started the second set with the Buckeyes’ first ace of the evening. The Wolverines took their first lead of the set at 4-3. Ohio State strung together a 5-0 run with an ace from Sarah Sue Morbitzer forcing a Michigan timeout with the Buckeyes leading 8-4. OSU extended its run to 9-1 to take a 12-5 lead before four-consecutive points from the Wolverines forced a Buckeye timeout leading 12-9. Michigan used a 3-0 run to get within two at 14-12. OSU used a three-point run of its own to extend its lead to 18-13 and force a second Wolverine timeout. Michigan got as close as four points at 22-18 before Ohio State closed the set with three-consecutive points to win 25-18.
Londot started the third set with her eighth kill of the match before Michigan scored back-to-back to grab its first lead of the set. Morbitzer had her second ace of the match amidst a 3-0 Buckeye run as OSU took the lead back at 6-5. Michigan responded with a 5-1 run to lead 12-9 to force an Ohio State timeout, the biggest lead for either team in the set.
