Buffs Complete Sweep Against Cal


BOULDER — The Colorado women’s volleyball team took down Cal in three sets (25-17, 25-23, 25-22) here Sunday afternoon to earn its fourth-straight sweep against the Golden Bears.
 
The Buffaloes (12-4, 4-2 Pac12) swept the Bears (7-9, 0-6 Pac12) after only trailing four times in three sets while committing just nine errors compared to Cal’s 20.
 
Meegan Hart had a very impressive performance, recording 11 kills while hitting .526 and leading the team in blocks with five. Maya Tabron also had a great showing this afternoon as she had a team-high 12 kills, adding to her six digs on the defensive side.
 
Alexia Kuehl helped Colorado to secure the win, putting together a .545 hitting percentage on seven kills. Kuehl and Jil Scheggenburger combined for six total blocks.
 
The Buffs outhit Cal .342 to .206 and had four more blocks in the win, earning their sixth-straight victory against the Golden Bears.
 
CU will stay in Boulder this week to prepare for Washington State on Friday, Oct. 14th and Washington on Sunday, Oct. 16.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
SET ONE: Colorado jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead before Cal decided to take its first timeout. CU’s second 4-0 scoring run of the set gave the Buffs a 14-6 lead. Colorado forced another Bears timeout while outhitting Cal .438 to -.118. Schmidt picked up her fourth and fifth kills to cut the Bears deficit to five at 20-15. A combined block between Schneggenburger and Hart gave CU set point. A Cal service error resulted in a 25-17 set win for the Buffs. Colorado committed seven less errors than the Bears in the set.
 
SET TWO: Both teams traded kills to a 4-4 tie early in the set before CU went on a three-point scoring run to go up 7-4. The Colorado retained the lead at 12-11 following back-to-back kills from Hart. Four unanswered points from the Buffs gave them a 14-11 advantage and forced a Cal timeout. Out of the break, the Bears tied it at 14-14. The tie lasted to 18 all before CU went up two at 20-18. Cal called its second and final timeout of the set while trailing 23-21 following Hart’s seventh kill. Hart picked up another kill to set up Colorado set point. CU won the set 25-23 after Hadrych’s sixth kill of the match.
