Demiter, Hoyt To Join Bears

BERKELEY – The California beach volleyball team signed two Class of 2025 standouts as announced by head coach Meagan Owusu. Hannah Demiter and Olivia Hoyt will join the Golden Bears next fall.

“We are thrilled to welcome Olivia and Hannah to the Cal beach volleyball family,” Owusu said. “They have both been trained by some of the top club coaches in the country, so they come with a strong base of skill and knowledge of the game. They bring a lot of strength and versatility, and we cannot wait to see them in Berkeley next year.”

Demiter comes to Berkeley from Encinitas where she competed for Wave Beach, a highly touted club program that produces multiple Division I athletes every year. She enjoyed a fantastic 2023 season, taking home the All-League Most Valuable Player award and earning a spot on VolleyballMag’s Girls Beach Fab 50 list.

Demiter also gets it done in the classroom as a 2023 All-Academic team member. She is not the first Bear in her family as both her grandfather, Michael Herbert, and her cousin, Patrick Lashinsky, attended Cal.

Hoyt is a St. Petersburg, Florida, native who competed for Optimum Beach, one of the top clubs in the state. A three-time JVA Best in Beach nominee, Hoyt earned over 15 first-place finishes over the last four years and was the top player in her club the last two years.

Hoyt also has a strong academic standing as an AP Scholar with Distinction award winner who has made the Principle’s List every year of high school. Her father, John Hoyt, was an All-American boxer for the Naval Academy and competed for the lacrosse team. Her mother, Karen Hoyt, ran track at San Diego State and was a professional beach volleyball player for the AVP.
