Cal Promotes 2 Beach Volleyball Coaches

Mayer Named Associate Head Coach, Styles Moved Up To Assistant Coach

BERKELEY- Head coach Meagan Owusu and the California beach volleyball team announced two promotions within its coaching staff earlier this week. Former assistant coach Joseph Mayer has been named the program’s associate head coach, and former volunteer assistant coach Dancer Styles will now serve as the team’s assistant coach.

“We are so excited to announce the promotion of [Mayer] and [Styles],” Owusu said. “They have been crucial our success over the last few years and have played a huge part in building the incredible culture that surrounds our program. We’re all so glad we get to continue building our program with them on our staff.”

Mayer becomes the just the second person to hold the associate head coach title in the program’s young history following Owusu, who held the title during the 2015 season. Since Mayer’s arrival in 2021, the Golden Bears have had their two most successful and historical seasons – making the NCAA Championship for the first time in 2021 and returning for the second straight time this past year. Cal also broke the program wins record twice and earned its first NCAA Championship win, topping Long Beach State 3-2 in the first round in May.

Styles has served in a volunteer capacity for the last three seasons and has been a crucial part of the program’s recent rise. He has brought a wealth of experience to the team as a former professional player on the AVP tour and longtime coach at multiple levels of the sport. Since his arrival the Bears have posted three straight seasons with a plus-.500 record.
