PROVO, Utah – No. 8 Stanford dropped its regular season finale in straight sets to No. 6 BYU, 25-22, 25-23, 25-19, Saturday, at Smith Fieldhouse.
The Cardinal (13-12, 6-6 MPSF) secures the No. 3 seed in next week’s MPSF Tournament, being held April 19-20, 22 at Maples Pavilion.
BYU (18-6, 8-4), which hit .309 as a team and recorded 7.0 blocks and four aces, locked in the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament, completing an undefeated home season in the process.
Outside hitter Will Rottman and opposite Theo Snoey each had 10 kills to lead the Cardinal offensively. As a team, Stanford hit .260 and recorded 41 kills, 28 digs and 4.5 blocks, but was unable to overcome an 80 percent sideout rate by BYU.
Senior Nathan Lietzke and freshman Theoren Brouillette split time at setter. Lietzke totaled 19 assists, three digs and a kill, while Brouillette turned in 16 assists, a team-high six digs and a kill. Libero Justin Lui finished with five digs and an assist.
Outside hitter Kevin Lamp hit .368 with nine kills, a dig and a block. Middle blocker Nathaniel Gates had six kills on .600 hitting, three digs and a block, while Ethan Hill chipped in with four kills and three blocks.
The Cougars were led by outside hitter Luke Benson and Miks Ramanis, who notched 14 and 10 kills, respectively.
Stanford will face No. 6 seed USC on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Maples Pavilion. Tickets are on sale now.
