PITTSBURGH – In a conference matchup of top-5 teams, No. 5 Stanford was swept by No. 1 Pitt on Sunday, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20, in a women’s volleyball contest televised by ESPN at sold-out Fitzgerald Fieldhouse.
Stanford (14-3 overall) dropped into a fourth-place tie in the Atlantic Coast Conference at 6-2. It was their first meeting since 1994 and the first time Stanford played Pitt (17-1, 7-1) as ACC competitors.
Jordyn Harvey led Stanford with 11 kills and a .368 hitting percentage, but the Cardinal was held to a .090 hitting percentage, its lowest since a 2020 loss to Arizona. Meanwhile, Pitt hit .314.
Elia Rubin, Stanford’s season kill leader, was held to seven kills and a minus-.038 hitting percentage.
A combination of service pressure and the Panthers’ blocking (13 blocks) was Stanford’s undoing. The Cardinal led 1-0 in the first set on a Harvey kill, but did not lead at any time in the match until short-lived advantages of 3-2 and 4-3 in the third set.
Sami Francis was in on seven blocks and Kami Miner had five as the Cardinal totaled 10 blocks in its only regular-season contest against Pitt this year.
Stanford returns to action Wednesday with back-to-back matches against Cal, first in Berkeley on Wednesday and then at Maples Pavilion on Friday, each at 7 p.m.
