BERKELEY, Calif. – The Wildcats lost the first match of the weekend to Cal (24-26, 20-25, 25-20, 18-25) on Friday night.
Sofia Maldonado Diaz and Jordan Wilson each recorded 10 or more kills. Maldonado Diaz led the Wildcats with 16 kills and Wilson had 13 kills. Jaelyn Hodge followed with nine kills. Alayna Johnson recorded three kills and five blocks.
Cal won the first set, 24-26. Arizona held the lead for most of the set until the Golden Bears pulled ahead at the end. Wilson led the Wildcats with five kills and Maldonado Diaz had three kills.
Arizona fell 20-25 in the second set. Maldonado Diaz tallied four kills and Wilson had five kills. Cal went on a run to take a large lead in the middle of the set and Arizona couldn’t come back.
The Wildcats won Set 3, 25-20. Maldonado Diaz recorded four kills while Jordan and Hodge had three kills each. Johnson tallied two solo blocks and Ana Heath won the set with her third service ace of the match.
Cal won Set 4, 18-25, to win the match. Arizona fell to a large lead early on but battled back later in the set but it wasn’t enough. Hodge led Arizona’s attack with five kills and Maldonado Diaz had three kills.
The Cats will face No. 3 Stanford on Sunday, October 1 at 1 p.m. MST in Palo Alto.
