Cats Fall to Arizona State in Four Sets

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona dropped the first Pac-12 match of the season, 3-1, to Arizona State.
 
The Cats out-blocked ASU, but the Sun Devils hit .311 as a team to win in four sets. Jaelyn Hodge led Arizona with 13 kills and Alayna Johnson followed with 12 kills.
 
Arizona won the first set 25-23, led by Hodge and Johnson with four kills each. Zyonna Fellows had three kills and helped the Arizona defense hold ASU to a .171 hitting percentage in the first set.
 
Arizona State won the second set, 25-20, to even the match. Hodge led the Cats with four kills, but the Sun Devils hit .485 to overpower Arizona’s defense.
 
ASU won Set 3, 26-24. Arizona’s defense tallied four blocks, led by Fellows with two block assists, but the Cats couldn’t hold the lead after tying the set at 23-23.
 
Arizona State won the fourth set, 25-20, to win the match. The Wildcats fell behind early in the set and couldn’t come back. Sofia Maldonado Diaz had four kills, while Fellows and Emery Herman each had two blocks in the set.
 
The Wildcats will head to Utah for their first conference road match on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. MST.
