TUCSON– The 19th ranked Arizona Wildcats hosted Arizona State on senior day at Bear Down Beach Friday. The Wildcats fell to the Sun Devils, 4-1.
Abby Russell and Hope Shannon took care of business on court two defeating Anya Pemberton and Ivey Weber in two sets, 23-21, 21-15.
Kali Uhl and Dilara Gedikoglu claimed the first set on court four against Arizona State, 21-16. Sarah Waters and Taryn Ames then fought back in the second set to push to a third, 21-18. The Arizona duo finished strong, taking down the ASU pair, 15-8, in the third set to put Arizona ahead, 2-0, going into the second flight.
SandCats faced a tougher challenge in the second flight, dropping all three courts to fall to Arizona State. All three courts needed three sets to determine a winner.
Lexi Sweeney and Kylie Wickley(ASU) battled back and won the second and third sets to take a team point on court one. Alex Parkhurst and Sarah Blacker won the first set 21-17.
Alana Rennie and Grace Cook dropped set 1, but got a set 2 victory, 21-15, before ultimately falling in the third set to Carys Thomas and Rylie Kael(ASU).
Annie Kost and Miranda Erro similarly dropped their first set before winning their second, 21-15. They were taken down by Kate Fitzgerald and Adri Nieves Papaleo(ASU) in the third set.
After the match, Bear Down Beach hosted a senior day celebration with all the friends and family of the graduating athletes.
Arizona will await the announcement of their brackets this weekend as they head to Stanford for the Pac-12 Tournament next week.
