Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, August 14, 2022 – Invincible China underlined their supremacy over the 2022 AVC Cup for Men at the Nakhon Pathom Provincial Gymnasium on Sunday after putting it past formidable Japan in hard-fought three-set thriller in the mighty final showdown to capture the prestigious title with remarkable unbeaten record.
The sensational 25-20, 25-23, 25-22 victory in the Sunday’s showdown not only smashed Japan’s dreams of winning their unprecedented title in this topflight tournament, but also became the China’s second time in history since they first won it 10 years ago in the 2012 AVC Cup for Men in Vinh Yen, Vietnam.
The mighty China, current world No.19, performed brilliantly to stun defending champions Brazil in straight sets on their home soil Brasilia in this year’s VNL Week 1. They completed their Volleyball Nationals League campaign in 13th position out of 16 teams participating in the world-level competition. China also picked up well-earned bronze medal at the last year’s Asian Senior Men’s Championship in Japan.
Japan came in second place, their best performance ever in this top-tier competition. They had claimed bronze medal for three times, 2012 in Vietnam, 2016 in Nakhon Pathom here and 2018 in Chinese Taipei.
Meanwhile, debutants Bahrain caused a major sensation as they stunned Korea, world No.33 and bronze medallists at the recent FIVB Challenger Cup in Seoul, in hard-fought three-set thriller 25-23, 27-25, 32-30 in the third-place playoff clash to claim historic bronze medal. Korea, fielding many substitutions in the playoff match, took the fourth place.
Former three-time champions Iran, fielding their U20 squad this time in their final preparation for the Bahrain-hosted 21st Asian Men’s U20 Championship between August 22 and 29, also made their mark to end their campaign on a positive note following their 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 26-24) triumph over Pakistan to return with the 5th place.
Thailand saved the best for last on Sunday when they stunned world No.39 Australia, the team they went down 1-3 in the round of the last eight teams in Pool E, in hard-fought four sets 25-19, 25-28, 21-25, 26-24 in the 7th-8th playoff clash on Sunday.
