Hangzhou, China, July 4, 2023 – Chinese Taipei claimed their second victory after brushing off Iran in comfortable three-setter 25-15, 25-10, 25-15 in the 1st Asian Women’s U16 Volleyball Championship at China Textile City Sports Centre Gymnasium here on Tuesday evening.
Middle blockers Ma Te-jung and Wu Tzu-hua bagged 9 point apiece for the winning side, while Afzouni Laya scored 6 points on the Iran’s losing effort.
Both sides took turns leading from the very beginning before Chinese Taipei started to gain the upper hand to widen the margin to 20-12, courtesy of their consistency and resilience. Chinese Taipei maintained their poise and cruised on to clinch the first set 25-15.
Chinese Taipei raced to a 6-point lead in the second set and from then stormed on their fine form to take the second set 25-10.
The third set witnessed service errors from two sides in the beginning. With better-organized cooperation, Chinese Taipei excelled in offense, coming up with spectacular attacks and effective blocks to stay in front with a 13-point advantage at 22-9. Iran regrouped and hit back mightily to reduce the gap to 15-22, but their fightback was shortlived as Chinese Taipei went on their onslaught to win the set 25-15 and match.
“My girls were a bit nervous and could not give their best in the beginning. But they gradually adjusted themselves. I am satisfied with their performance both defensively and offensively. Almost everyone on court has met my expectations,” said Hou Yahui, head coach of Chinese Taipei, after the match.
Chinese Taipei will next go up against Japan in a tough match on Thursday to determine the Pool F winners.
