Pasig City, Philippines, August 23, 2022 – Chinese Taipei emerged with a 3-2 win (23-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-21, 15-6) in Pool B of the preliminary round of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women.
Tuesday’s opening match at the Philsports Arena lasted 155 minutes, as each team fought for every ball in every play for a closely-contested match.
Middle blocker Kan Ko-Hui played consistently across all five sets, scoring a total of 18 points. Captain Chang Li-Wen (15 points) and Chen Tzu-Ya (12 points) also brought in double-digit scores.
Opposite Caitlin Tipping led all scorers on the board, tallying a massive 28 points in the loss.
Australia showed good rhythm going into the match, enabling Tipping from the wing. They were likewise reaping the benefits, and points off their opponents’ errors.
Chinese Taipei took to activating the middle attack on Kan Ko-Hui to try and surge forward. They set up Chang Li-Wen and Chen Tzu-Ya at the flanks.
The Australian side tried to line up their blocks better, given their height advantage, and seeing that their opponents were picking up their offensive pace.
Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei played better and more cohesively in transition, and they were extremely patient in recycling their plays. They tried to work off-the-block points in order to score against the tall line-up in front of them.
By the decider, Chinese Taipei were playing with mostly substitutes.
“I always trust my teammates, and whoever is playing on court, I really trust them. They know what to do, they understand the situation, and they know their role,” said Chinese Taipei captain Chang Li-Wen on their substitutes’ stepping up to the situation.
The Chinese Taipei side served well which caused a lagging passing unit of their opponents. Lin Shu-Ho likewise performed well at right flank, scoring in decisive moments to help take the five-set win.
Chinese Taipei will face Thailand on Wednesday, August 24 at 16:00 local time. Australia will have a rest day and resume when they play Japan on Thursday, August 25 at 13:00 local time.
