STANFORD, Calif. – In the first-ever meeting between the Clemson Tigers and the Stanford Cardinal on the volleyball court, No. 6 Stanford (17-4, 9-3 ACC) claimed a three-set victory (14-25, 18-25, 15-25) against the Tigers (8-16, 0-13 ACC) on Friday evening.
The Tigers were led offensively by Azyah Dailey, who contributed eight kills. Mia McGrath and Kate Hansen followed with seven and five kills, respectively. McGrath’s seven kills helped propel her past the 600 kill mark of her career to now sit with 602 through the Stanford match. Redshirt sophomore Katherine Sandt contributed a team-high 23 assists. Sophomore McKenna Gildon and McGrath also notched aces during the match.
Defensively, McGrath led the way with nine digs, as Sandt contributed eight of her own. At the net, sophomore Kate Simington claimed the lone solo block for the Tiger squad. Indigo Young finished with two block assists, while Hansen and Dailey each had one assisted block.
The Tigers best scoring run came in the second set after Clemson hit .242 as a team. Clemson claimed its first lead off an ace by Gildon, while Hansen, Simington and Dailey powered the Tiger offense with kills, and Sandt pushed her assist count into double digits. Simington provided Clemson’s first block of the match in the second set, while Young and Dailey combined for the second block immediately following Simington’s.
Stanford finished with a .418 hitting percentage, led by Sami Francis hitting .706 off 13 kills and only one error. The Cardinal also had eight aces and five blocks to propel them to victory.
