Cortland Begins SUNYAC Play with Sweep at Oswego

OSWEGO N.Y. – Cortland opened SUNYAC women’s volleyball league play with a 25-10, 25-23, 25-14 sweep at Oswego.
 
Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) led the Red Dragons (11-2, 1-0 SUNYAC) with 11 kills and eight aces and added 10 digs. Kira Pirrera (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) and Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck) finished with six kills apiece. Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) paced the Red Dragons with 14 digs, Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) handed out 16 assists and Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) added 13 assists.
 
Grace Taylor led Oswego (1-9, 0-1 SUNYAC) with four kills.
 
Cortland finished the night with a .236 team attack percentage (38 kills, 17 errors in 89 attempts) while limiting Oswego to a .039 hitting percentage (12 kills, nine errors in 77 attempts).

Cortland controlled play in the first and third sets. In the second set, however, Oswego held a 23-20 lead after a Cara Simplicio ace before the Red Dragons rattled off the final five points on a Lakers’ error, a Madelyn McCormack (Remsen) ace, a Pilkey kill, another McCormack ace and another Pilkey kill.

 

Cortland travels to Hamilton on Friday night and hosts Eastern University (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon in non-league matches.
