Cortland Sweeps SUNY Poly in Home Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women’s volleyball team registered a team hitting percentage of .363 on Friday evening in Corey Gymnasium, earning a 25-3, 25-16, 25-9 sweep of visiting SUNY Poly in the home opener. Cortland improves to 5-2 on the year, while SUNY Poly falls to 0-5 with the defeat.

Sophomore Erica Arroyo (Nesconset/Smithtown West) led the Red Dragons with seven kills and seven digs. Senior Alexa Guedez (Mamoroneck/Rye Neck) had six kills on a .455 hitting percentage, while senior Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) recorded a .556 hitting percentage, contributing five kills on nine attempts without an error. Sophomore Anna Lynch (Rochester/Our Lady of Mercy) totaled five kills and four blocks for Cortland.

Kaylee DeGroat had five of the Wildcats’ 11 kills for the match, while Samantha Dee and Daniella Aluisio led the SUNY Poly defense with eight and seven digs, respectively.

Cortland started off strong, racing out to a 14-0 lead in the first set that included a 13-point service run by senior Jennifer Koestner (Syosset) that also included three aces. After the Wildcats broke the streak, Cortland scored the next four points to extend the lead to 18-1, backed by a pair of kills from Kira Pirrera (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) and a kill each by Pilkey and junior Emma Reilly (Massapequa Park/Massapequa). The Red Dragons cruised the rest of the way in taking the set 25-3.

The Wildcats responded early in the second set, jumping out to an 8-4 lead. After a Cortland timeout to regroup, the Red Dragons went on a 10-4 run, taking the lead after two aces by Arroyo and a kill by Emalee Ballou (Eden). Leading 18-15…
