Cougs roll Cal Baptist in home opener

CSU Bakersfield vs Cal Baptist

PULLMAN, Wash. — Laura Jansen had 13 kills (13-0-23) and Washington State volleyball (3-1) finished with 12 blocks as a team as the Cougars swept California Baptist (1-3), 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-21), on Thursday night in Bohler Gym.

“It’s nice to be back at home in Bohler,” said head coach Jen Greeny.  “It’s nice to be able to work on some issues we saw [at BYU] against some good teams this weekend while playing in front of our fans.”

Magda Jehlarova finished with six blocks with a pair of solo blocks while Katy Ryan and Pia Timmer added three block assists apiece.  Laura Jansen had her best match so far as a Coug with 13 kills and a .565 hitting percentage while Ryan hit double digits for the first time this season with 10 on only 17 swings (10-0-17, .588).

Argentina Ung finished with 35 assists to go along with a pair of blocks and a pair of kills while starting libero Karly Basham added four assists in addition to her team-leading 10 digs.

“Argentina has been working extremely hard and she’s super athletic.  She just keeps getting better and better so it’s just great to have someone in our gym that is so dedicated to that position and making our offense work,” said Greeny.

The Cougs came out of the gates on fire offensively, winning seven of the first eight points en route to a 19-6 start to the match.  WSU hit .484 (16-1-31) in the opening set while holding Cal Baptist to .000 (6-6-30) to win the first, 25-9.
