PULLMAN, Wash. – Katy Ryan (13-3-23, .435) and Laura Jansen (13-4-29, .310) tied with a team-high 13 kills and Karly Basham tied an all-time record with seven service aces as Washington State volleyball (4-1) won, 3-0 (25-7, 21-25, 25-12, 25-20), over Belmont (1-4) on Friday in Bohler Gym.
Magda Jehlarova surpassed head coach Jen Greeny (Stinson) on the all-time list for career block assists, now ranking seventh with 361 after tallying six for a second-straight match.
Washington State came out of the gates with one of its best opening sets on the early season, jumping out to a 13-2 lead behind the serves of Basham, Julia Norville and Pia Timmer. Belmont finished the opening set just 6-of-24 (25 percent) on sideouts and the Cougs hit a collective .409 (12-3-22) to go ahead in the match with a dominant, 25-7, first-set win.
As WSU began to mix in several reserves in its first of two matches on the day, Belmont went on to tally 17 kills as a team in set two. The Bruins hit .405 with only two errors while the Cougs suffered from a match-high seven errors as Belmont evened the match with a 25-21 win in set two.
WSU responded with only a single error in the third set and hit a match-high .688 as a team (12-1-16) in the third set and held Belmont to just .154 hitting (13-9-26) in the fourth to close out the match.
Washington State closes out the Cougar Challenge tonight in Bohler Gym at 7 p.m.
