SEATTLE – The Beach Dawgs were unable to get a day one upset today as the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championships kicked off at Stanford. The 13th-ranked Huskies were trying to take down the host, 8th-ranked Stanford, but lost a 3-0 decision to move into the contender’s bracket.
Washington (20-14) will look to make its way back through the double-elimination tournament starting Thursday at 12 noon in a loser-out match against Utah. A win would then put the Huskies in another elimination match against either Cal or USC at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow. All Pac-12 tournament matches are being televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
The staggered start had the No. 3 and No. 5 pairs playing first today. Stanford’s Andersson/Gusarova picked up the first win in straight sets over Hannah Yerex and Shannon Gormally, 21-18, 21-8, at No. 5. At the three spot, Scarlett Dahl and Paloma Bowman dropped the opening set to Reilly/Sharp, but took set two to force a third. But Stanford regained momentum and won it, 15-9, to put the Huskies down 2-0.
Stanford clinched at the No. 4 spot, where Belardi/Vincent topped Teagan DeFalco and Mary Sinclair. The Cardinal took set one, 21-13, but the Huskies had it at 10-10 in the second set, needing to force a third, but Stanford went on a run and ultimately won the second by the same score.
The matches at Pac-12s are played to decision so courts 1 and 2 were abandoned. Chloe Loreen and Natalie Robinson were early in a third set after splitting the first two sets on court one. Piper Monk-Heidrich and Kendall Mather were still in their first set on court two.
