Fayette, MO – The Vikings competed in the Hampton Inn Classic day two this past Saturday. The team would split games, defeating William Woods University in the first match resulting in new Head Coach Devon Wells‘s first career win in a five-set fashion, 17-25,25-20,25-18,23-25,15-11. Then they would drop game two to Ottawa University in four sets, 24-26,25-23,25-11,25-22.
Set 1: Grand View University 17 l William Woods University 25
The Vikings got off to a slower start in the first set. Stat wise in the first set the Vikings would previal in all categories, but falling a victim to attacking errors which ultimatley set the first set in favor to William Woods having ten more. Alesha Johnson (JR/Council Bluffs, IA) would give the Vikings a spark by a service ace, but it wasnt enough to push the Vikings to forcing extra points.
Set 2: Grand View University 25 l William Woods University 20
Alesha Johnson once again started the Vikings off with hot momentum starting the second set with an ace. Johnson would serve for the Vikings all the way to the third point, until a service error. Brooke Flater (SR/Grundy Center, IA) would push the Vikings to their highest lead of the set thus far off of an assist from Rylie Olson (SR/Osage, IA) 5-7. The set would go back and forth until the William Woods hit 20 points where they would stay for the rest of the set, and the Vikings would pull away due to errors by the Owls.
Set 3: Grand View University 25 l William Woods University 18
In set three, the Vikings and Owls would once again go back and forth until the 5-6 point mark, where the Vikings would not trail the remainder of the set. Chevy Wagner-Chun (JR/Waianae, HI) would hit a service ace and give the Vikings their highest lead of the set. Taylor Carey (SR/Waukee, IA) then would have a kill that would then seal the set in favor of the Vikings.
Set 4: Grand View University 25 l William Woods University 23
Set four favored William Woods the whole way, but the Vikings showed a lot of fight cutting their bigest deficit of the game from 6-2, to 7-5 off a kill from Sydney Beasley (SO/Darlington, WI) and another ace from Johnson. The Owls would pull away at the end off of collective team errors, pushing their lead out to 24-21 and sealing the set off of one more point.
Set 5: Grand View University 15 l William Woods University 11
