Ducks Add Elite Blocker McGhee for 2023


EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon head coach Matt Ulmer has announced the addition of graduate transfer Kara McGhee to the Ducks’ 2023 roster. McGhee began her collegiate career at Baylor and comes to Eugene as a three-time All-Big 12 performer and an AVCA All-America Honorable Mention selection on the heels of a standout 2022 season.
 
The 6-5 middle blocker averaged a career-high 3.25 points per set and 2.41 kills per set while hitting .368 this past season and helping Baylor to a 25-7 record with a trip to the Sweet 16. McGhee also led the Big 12 and finished eighth in the NCAA with 1.49 blocks per set, another career-high figure.
 
In addition to AVCA national honors, McGhee earned a spot on the VolleyballMag.com All-America Third Team and AVCA Southwest All-Region Team. She was also voted to the All-Big 12 First Team for a second time in her career, and was one of five unanimous picks to the 15-player team. During the year, McGhee was twice named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.
 
McGhee tallied 10 or more kills in 12 matches this past season including a career-high 16 kills (.433) in a four-set win at Texas Tech (Nov. 2). In a display of her defensive prowess at the net, she had at least five blocks in 17 matches in 2022 highlighted by a season-high 11 blocks against San Diego State (Sept. 2). In the Bears’ NCAA second-round win over Rice, McGhee recorded 12 kills and nine blocks.
 
The San Antonio, Texas, native posted the second double-double of her career with a 10-kill (.563), 10-block performance in a three-set win at West Virginia (Oct. 8). McGhee approached a triple-double the week prior with 11 kills (.474), eight blocks and eight digs in a five-set win at Kansas.
 
McGhee joins the Ducks with 686 career kills and 529 career blocks, a figure that ranks fifth all-time at Baylor and seventh on the NCAA active career list at the of the recent season. Her 174 total blocks this past campaign are fourth most on the Baylor single-season list.
 
Oregon finished the 2022 campaign with a 26-6 record and a postseason run to the Elite Eight for a third time in program history. The Ducks’ win total (26) is tied for third on the program’s single-season list and dating back to the 2021 season, UO has won 18-consecutive matches at Matthew Knight Arena including a 14-0 mark this past year.
