Ducks Can’t Overcome Slow Starts in LA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Oregon beach volleyball team closed out the Pac-12 South Invitational with losses to Cal and Washington, a pair of top-20 opponents. The Ducks’ stay in Los Angeles also featured matches against top-ranked UCLA and No. 17 Arizona.

In their final match of the weekend, the Ducks dropped the first three points of its dual against No. 16 Washington. The Huskies clinched the victory with wins at the No. 1, 3 and 5 spots but Oregon played three setters in the last two matches.

At the No. 2 spot, Ella Tyus and Bea Wetton dropped the opening set to Kendall Mathe and Piper Monk-Heidrich, and saved a handful of match points in the second before coming through with a 28-26 result to force a decisive set. The teams played to an 11-11 tie before the UW pair used a three-point surge to take control in a 15-12 triumph.

Natasha George and Ashley Schroeder, the Ducks’ No. 4 pair, took the first set against Paloma Bowman and Mary Sinclair. The Huskies’ duo responded with a win in set two to extend the match. With the set tied at 9-9, Washington scored three of the next four points on its way to completing the dual sweep.

In the opener, Oregon (2-7) was swept in all five duals resulting in a 5-0 setback to Cal.

Oregon faces another loaded field next weekend with the Queens Cup, a three-day tournament hosted by Hawaii. In addition to rematches with Cal and Washington, the Ducks are set to face Nebraska, Texas and Hawaii. Click HERE for the full 2023 schedule.
