Duke Drops Two Matches Friday at doTERRA Classic

PROVO, Utah – The Duke volleyball team began its 2022 slate Friday at the doTERRA Classic, dropping both matches on opening day. The Blue Devils fell to Washington State (3-1) before a 3-1 setback to No. 10 BYU. 

GAME 1 | DUKE vs. WASHINGTON STATE

How it Happened

  • Duke dropped a 3-1 (26-24, 14-25, 21-25, 20-25) decision to Washington State Friday morning.
  • Senior outside hitter Gracie Johnson led the Blue Devil offensive contingent with 17 kills, while Rachel Richardson added 13 to Moorea Wood’s 10.
  • Graduate setter Devon Chang dished 44 assists and added three blocks.
  • All tied up at 24 in the first set, Chang found Johnson and Richardson for consecutive kills to give Duke a one-set lead heading into the second.
  • Washington State hit .458 percent to win the second set, 25-14, with 12 kills and only one error. They went on to hit .519 percent to take the third (25-21) and four Duke service errors in the fourth helped the Cougars win the match.

  • “It was really exciting to step on the court today as a team to face Washington State,” Nagel said. “We fought hard and secured the first set. We needed to sustain our serve, serve receive and defense more consistently through the match. We did some good things offensively, but need to pick up our defensive execution. When playing a strong opponent, we have to be thinking one step ahead and making some stops to help our cause.”
