Duke Falls on the Road to Miami, 3-1

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Duke dropped a 3-1 decision (21-25, 28-26, 15-25, 21-25) at Miami Friday evening in Coral Gables, Fla. 

The Hurricanes improve to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the ACC as the Blue Devils dip to 10-4 and 1-2 in the conference. 

Miami hit .297 percent and was led by Flormarie Heredia Colon with with 20 kills as three players tallied double-digit kills. 

Duke was led by Gracie Johnson and Kerry Keefe with 10 kills each, while Lizzie Fleming added eight and no errors to hit .444 percent. Setter Emma Worthington racked up 42 assists, while libero Madison Bryant led the defensive charge with 11 digs. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hurricanes came out swinging in the first set to take an early 1-0 lead. Miami hit .257 percent and put Duke on its heels with just a .158 clip. 
  • Both teams performed well offensively in the second set. Miami hit .303 percent and Duke .286 percent. 
  • Head coach Jolene Nagel has put an emphasis on serving tough all season and Duke did just that in the second set. Christina Barrow, Johnson and Keefe all tallied an ace as Ngozi Iloh came off the bench to hit .600 percent with four quick kills. 
  • Miami’s fifth service error of the match gave Duke set point as Johnson tallied her seventh kill of the match to even the match score (1-1). 
  • The Hurricanes fought back and reclaimed the lead (2-1) with a .353 set three hitting percentage and ultimately secured the match with a .269 fourth-set clip.
