Caen, France, 1 December 2023 – The Netherlands are the only undefeated team after Day 1 of the 2023 Sitting Volleyball Men’s European Bronze Nations League here in this historic city of Normandy.
The Dutch, who are making their debut in the competition after two years in the Golden League, defeated Estonia 3-1 and then shut out rookies Georgia 3-0 and now stand at 2-0 at the top of the table of the single round-robin tournament.
The top two teams after pool play advance to Sunday’s final.
In what turned out to be match of the day, the support of some 2000 raucous schoolchildren who filled the venue to capacity was just not enough to push the hosts to a win, as they fell in five dramatic sets to defending champions Czechia.
Having lost earlier in the morning to Georgia in straight sets, Czechia have rebounded to remain in the race for a spot in Sunday’s final and a chance to defend their titles from 2021 and 2022.
Hosts France, in preparation to represent the home nation at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, also rebounded from their loss to Czechia, taking down Estonia in another five dramatic sets – for a total of ten within the space of one short afternoon.
This leaves Estonia the only winless side of the tournament after two matches.
Competition Saturday all day with the remaining five matches of pool play ahead of the medals matches scheduled for Sunday morning.
