Egypt triumph over Iraq in men's opener

The 2023 WPV Sitting Volleyball World Cup started with one match on Sunday in Cairo, Egypt. The event was launched with an opening ceremony before hosts Egypt took on Iraq in the first match of the men’s competition.

Egypt delighted their home crowd, starting their World Cup bid with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-23) win over Iraq.

On Sunday, November 12, Iraq will play another match against African side Rwanda in Group A at 10:00 local time, followed by the encounter of Japan and Algeria at 11:30 in Group B. The next schedule match is in Group C with two Asian sides up, China and India, up against each other at 13:30, and two Group D matches, with Germany facing Britain at 15:00 and Ukraine playing France at 17:00.

The women’s tournament will open on Sunday, starting with the match between China and Mongolia at 10:30, followed by the encounter between Rwanda and Germany at 12:00 in Group E. Group F matches will start at 14:00, featuring world champions Brazil against European squad Netherlands, and then the encounter between European powerhouses Slovenia and Ukraine will be played at 15:30. The final match will be a clash between Mongolia and Rwanda at 17:30.

The World Cup is a Paris 2024 Paralympic qualifier, where one berth per gender is available for the winner or the highest placed non-qualified team of the tournament. 

Ten teams have qualified so far for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, including France (M and W) as hosts, world champions Iran (M) and Brazil (W), Asian champions Kazakhstan (M) and China (W), European champions Bosnia and Herzegovina (M) and Italy (W), and Pan American champions Brazil (M) and United States (W).
