Defending champions Italy, who outplayed hosts Slovenia last year at the same venue for the 2022 title, are the undisputed favourites. The hosts, however, remain hopeful to produce good results taking home advantage.
“We are not in the best shape right now,” said Slovenia head coach Simon Bozic. “But we play at home and will try our best to produce entertaining matches. It’s also good preparation to see where we stand right now, ahead of this year’s European Championship.”

There is tight competition in this year’s tournament, as 2021 silver medallists Ukraine are now back to compete after missing out on last year’s competition because of the war, along with 2022 bronze medallists Germany and Poland.
All five teams completed their last training sessions ahead of Friday afternoon’s opening matches.
“This will be a very level competition so no predictions can be made,” added Mr Bozic.
The three-day tournament is a single round-robin pool with the first- and second-ranked teams playing out for gold in the final and the third- and fourth-ranked sides clashing for bronze on Sunday.
