Since 1981, only four women’s college volleyball programs have completed an undefeated season while winning the national championship. Among those four, one team achieved this historic feat twice—and did so in consecutive seasons.

Penn State (2008, 2009)

Penn State made history by becoming the first program to achieve undefeated national championship seasons twice, completing back-to-back perfect campaigns in 2008 and 2009 (38-0 each year). To top it all off, Penn State claimed national titles in both 2007 and 2010, becoming the first and only school in women’s volleyball history to win four consecutive championships.

Under the guidance of legendary head coach Russ Rose, the Nittany Lions solidified their dynasty with these remarkable seasons. Rose, the most decorated coach in women’s college volleyball history, led Penn State to an impressive seven national championships over the course of his illustrious career.

Southern California (2003)

Southern California’s women’s volleyball team dominated in 2003, finishing with a perfect 35-0 record under the leadership of coach Mick Haley. This marked back-to-back national titles for the Trojans, as they had also won in 2002.

The 2002 team came tantalizingly close to an undefeated season, with their sole loss coming in a nail-biter against No. 6 Stanford. That match went the distance, with Stanford prevailing 16-14 in the decisive fifth set.

Coach Haley, one of the sport’s most successful leaders, won three national championships during his career—two with USC and one with Texas.

Nebraska (2000)

The Nebraska Cornhuskers achieved perfection in 2000, completing a 34-0 season under coach John Cook.
