First chance to watch the 2023 Badgers

MADISON, Wis. – Mark your calendars for the Badger volleyball annual preseason scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 19 in the UW Field House. For the first time in program history, Wisconsin takes on another collegiate team as it faces UIC with first serve at 1 p.m. Doors to the Field House open at noon.

“In a week and a half, we’ll be playing an opponent in the Field House,” head coach Kelly Sheffield said.  “Instead of an intra-squad scrimmage like we’ve done just about every year, we decided there would be a lot more benefits to playing another team.  It will be great for us to get a chance to see our athletes compete against another team before our season opener.”

Tickets for the scrimmage are part of UW’s season ticket packages while single-match tickets are on sale now on UWBadgers.com.

Preseason Notes

  • The Badgers are picked to win their fifth-consecutive Big Ten championship in a preseason vote of conference coaches. Wisconsin landed four players on the preseason All-Big Ten team, the most of any school—Carter Booth, Sarah Franklin, Devyn Robinson, and Temi Thomas-Ailara.
  • Wisconsin returns five starters plus its libero and 12 letter winners. The Badgers add three players for the 2023 season, including two of the Big Ten’s top players. UW adds Carter Booth, who earned All-Big Ten honors at Minnesota as a freshman last season, and graduate transfer Temi Thomas-Ailara, a 2022 AVCA second-team All-American. UW also brings in freshman defensive specialist Saige Damrow.
  • UW returns more than 73 percent of its statistics for 2023. The Badgers return 98% (1413 of 1429) of their assists; 91% (1543 of 1585) of their digs; 90% (175 of 194) of their service aces; 82% (1265 of 1537) of their kills; and 73% (261.5 of 357.5) of their blocks.
