Pac-12, Geballe Awards Provide Support For Continuing Higher Education
BERKELEY – Four California student-athletes have earned postgraduate scholarships to help them pursue advanced degrees.
Fred Roper of the Golden Bears’ men’s rowing team and Kaitlyn Turner of the women’s rowing team have been awarded the Oscar and Theodore Geballe Postgraduate Scholarship for their combination of excellence in both academics and athletic competition. The award comes with a $10,000 stipend for postgraduate studies.
Elliott Kemp of men’s rowing and Lexi McKeown of beach volleyball earned a Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarship, created to honor outstanding scholar-athletes intending to pursue graduate studies. It comes with a $9,000 stipend.
The Oscar and Theodore Geballe Award was created through the generosity of Dr. Theodore Geballe to honor his father, Oscar Geballe, and recognizes his strong belief in the value of combining scholarship and intercollegiate athletic competition. There have now been 104 Geballe Award winners since 1981.
Roper has been a mainstay in Cal boats during his career, twice helping the second varsity eight win the Pac-12 championship and stroking the varsity eight boat as a sophomore. He is a double major in political economy and society & environment, and is a member of the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll and an IRCA Scholar-Athlete selection. Roper has been admitted into the Master’s of Science program for energy systems at Oxford, where he will also continue his rowing career.
Turner is in her third season serving as the coxswain of the Bears’ varsity eight boat and will guide Cal at the NCAA Championships this weekend at Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey. Turner is also double-majoring in business administration and society & environment and is a two-time honoree on the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll while also a member of the CRCA All-Academic Team. Turner has been admitted into the UCLA School of Law.
Kemp was part of Cal’s varsity eight that won the 2022 IRA national championship and helped the Bears win the Pac-12 championship earlier this month. Also an All-Pac-12 selection last season, Kemp is a two-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll pick and an IRCA Scholar-Athlete. Kemp earned his degree in molecular and cell biology and will also attend graduate school at Oxford to study neuroscience.
