Gallaudet picks up two United East road wins on Saturday


ABINGTON, Pa. – It was a clean sweep for the Gallaudet University women’s volleyball team on Saturday afternoon to begin a busy United East Conference weekend slate. 

Gallaudet (15-10, 4-0 United East) defeated the host Nittany Lions from Penn St.-Abington (10-15, 1-5 United East) by the score of 25-13, 25-18, 25-12. The Bison followed that up with a quick victory over Wells College (7-16, 1-5 United East) by the score of 25-11, 25-21, 25-13. 

The Bison served up 14 aces against Penn St.-Abington as sophomore defensive specialist Leila Sicoli (Austin, Texas) led the way with four aces and 12 digs. Senior outside hitter Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) led all hitters with 18 kills, eight digs and three service aces. Sophomore setter Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) passed out 37 assists, made eight digs and two service aces. Sophomore opposite Emily Wright (Auburn, Calif.) tallied 12 kills while senior opposite Elina Rubinshteyn (Austin, Texas) had nine kills.

GU served up another 12 aces in the straight-set win over Wells. Rubinshteyn and Lewis tallied 15 and 14 kills, respectively, while Wright tallied 12. Giuntoli passed out 24 assists and made eight digs while junior libero Mia Upchurch (Austin, Texas) recorded a match-high 20 digs and five aces.

  • Wright and Lewis surpassed 300 kills for the season today
  • Wright leads the team with 322 kills while Lewis has 313
  • Giuntoli has over 800 assists this season with 812 after today

UP NEXT
Gallaudet continues United East play tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 24) with two more matches. The Bison will travel to Lancaster, Pa., to face Penn St.-Berks (12-14, 4-0 United East) and the host Chargers (9-12, 2-2 United East) at 3 and 5 p.m., respectively.
