LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released its 40th annual All-America teams for NCAA Division III women’s volleyball and for the eighth time in program history a Gallaudet University student-athlete was recognized. Sophomore opposite Emily Wright (Auburn, Calif.) was one of 98 named to the 2021 AVCA All-America honorable mention list.
The AVCA named 14 players from across the nation to each of its three teams (First, Second, Third) as well as recognizing the other All-Region first team selections on its honorable mention list.
Wright helped Gallaudet to a 21-12 record and a 7-1 conference mark as the Bison went on to capture the United East championship and berth into the 2021 NCAA Division III women’s volleyball tournament for the first time since 2016.
Wright is ranked fifth in NCAA Division III for kills (484), 12th in total attacks (1,231), 14th in points (499.5), 31st in kills per set (3.93), 64th in points per set (4.06) and 106th in attacks per set (10.01). She helped Gallaudet get ranked 12th in total attacks (4,541) and 17th in team kills (1,508). Wright finished her rookie campaign with 484 kills, .272 hitting percentage, 53 digs and 25 blocks (four solo) in 33 matches (123 sets).
The honorable mention honor comes on the heels of other awards that Wright has received during the season. In addition to being recognized as the 2021 United East Rookie of the Year and being the named to the all-conference first team she was named the United East Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week three times (Sept. 20, Sept. 27, Nov. 1). Wright was named to the AVCA Division III All-Region first team for Region IV last week.
Wright is the seventh Bison to earn AVCA All-America Honorable Mention honors while Tamara Foronda is the lone Bison to be selected to an AVCA All-America team when she landed on the third team in 2006.
The AVCA has been presenting Division III All-America teams since 1981.
