GENERAL TECHNICAL MEETING OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES CAVA MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP IN UZBEKISTAN

Tashkent, Uzbekistan, October 17, 2024 – The CAVA Men’s Volleyball Championship, formerly known as the CAVA Men’s Challenge Cup, officially began on Thursday following the General Technical Meeting at “Stars International University.” 

The event was renamed to reflect the increasing parity among CAVA nations, as teams across the region continue to elevate their performance and demonstrate high levels of competitiveness.

 

Uzbekistan stepped in to host the championship in Tashkent after Bangladesh faced internal challenges due to political unrest. The Uzbekistan Volleyball Federation (UVF) Vice President Mr Jamshid Fayziyev, commented, “Hosting this event is crucial for us as we are preparing for the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship next year in August. This experience will help us refine our capabilities to successfully organize future international tournaments.”

   

The General Technical Meeting was attended by representatives from five participating teams – Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Maldives, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, while those from Afghanistan were absent due to delays in visa issuance and are expected to arrive on Friday and will be registered ahead of their first match.

Six teams will contest the single round-robin preliminaries from October 18 to 23. Top two teams will then renew their rivalry to fight it out for the eventual crown on October 24, with teams finishing third and fourth in the preliminaries to face off in the bronze-medal match and teams placed fifth and sixth places to compete in the classification 5th-6th playoff clash.

The one-week championship will officially open with the first match at 4:00pm, attended by prominent sports figures and dignitaries from Uzbekistan. 

Control Committee President and Technical Delegate Sarah Hessaby expressed her appreciation for UVF’s efforts in organizing this championship, stating, “Uzbekistan has proven its strong sense of brotherhood within CAVA, showing their capability to enhance the region’s volleyball standards. With the extensive training and experience gained from this event, Uzbekistan is well-prepared to host the FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship at the highest level.”

Six international referees have been appointed to officiate the CAVA Men’s Volleyball Championship, which will take place from October 18 to 24. Those appointed are as follows
