GRESIK CITY WARMLY WELCOMES TEAMS CONTENDING AVC CHALLENGE CUP FOR WOMEN

Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 17, 2023 – Teams from Australia, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, India, Iran, Macau China, Mongolia, Philippines, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and hosts Indonesia converged on Saturday evening for the General Technical Meeting of the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Women.  

In her message penned for all the participating teams and officials, AVC President Madame Rita Subowo emphasized the value of the competition.

“The AVC Challenge Cup for Women is the qualification tournament for the FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup in July this year. The best team will have a chance to show their capability to other confederations, and all the participating teams will earn ranking points,” she said. 

Control Committee President and Technical Delegate Mr Shanrit Wongprasert of Thailand, himself AVC Executive Director, underlined the same importance in defining the pathway designed for the competition.

 

“This will be an annual competition starting this year 2023. The winning team here will have a chance to play in the FIVB Challenger Cup, where the eventual winners will then qualify for the Volleyball Nations League,” he shared. 

In ensuring readiness for the conduct of competition, the AVC Control Committee conducted meetings and inspection activities in collaboration with the Local Organizing Committee under Persatuan Bola Voli Seluruh Indonesia (PBVSI).

PBVSI President Imam Sudjarwo expressed his heartfelt gratitude toward the AVC in entrusting the event to the host federation, and additionally thanked the participating teams for the AVC Challenge Cup for Women. 

“I wish the best success for this event, and I am confident that with the cooperation of participating teams and all concerned officials, this event will be successfully organized and show the unity of the AVC Family to others,” he said. 

Competition starts with pool play (Pool A – PHI, MAC, INA; Pool B – IRI, HKG, TPE; Pool C- AUS, IND; Pool D – UZB, VIE, MGL) on Sunday, June 18, 2023 in Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium. With the conclusion of the Preliminary Phase, teams engage in Classification matches on Wednesday, June 21, with rest and recovery day scheduled on Thursday, June 22. 

Friday (June 23) will see teams in the Quarter-finals, with the Semi-finals showdown set for Saturday, June 24; with the medal matches and Awarding Ceremony on Sunday, June 25, to determine the winners and the eventual teams to join the FIVB Volleyball Challenger…
