GU celebrates Senior Night in style with victory over Shenandoah


WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women’s volleyball team closed out its regular-season home schedule with a 3-1 victory over Shenandoah University here Wednesday night in the Field House. 

Gallaudet (17-11) started off slow against Shenandoah (5-16) and dropped the first set, 15-25, before it rattled off three straight set wins; 25-17, 25-23, 25-18 to take the win on senior night.

GU seniors Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) and Elina Rubinshteyn (Austin, Texas) finished with 16 and 14 kills, respectively, while Lewis led all players with 22 digs to record her 14th double-double this season. Senior libero Mia Upchurch (Austin, Texas) recorded 14 digs in the last regular-season home match. 

Freshman opposite Emily Wright (Auburn, Calif.) led the team with 19 kills while sophomore setter Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) passed out 52 assists and made nine digs and three block assists.

Shenandoah was led by Jillian Warter (16 kills, 23 digs) and Kate Poppo (15 kills, 21 digs), who both recorded double-doubles.

After the match, Gallaudet coach Lynn Ray Boren recognized the senior class which includes Lewis, Rubinshteyn, Mia Upchurch, team manager Brooke Courter and student-assistant CJ Upchurch.

BISON TRACKS

  • Lewis’ 22 digs is a season-high
  • Giuntoli tied her season-high mark for assists (52) for the third time this season
  • GU was held to a season-low for service aces (two)
  • This was the second time GU and SU faced each other this season
  • Gallaudet defeated Shenandoah, 3-2, back on Sept. 18 in Harrisonburg, Va.

UP NEXT
Gallaudet will close out United East Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 30, in Harrisburg, Pa., as the Bison (5-1 United East) face Penn St.-Harrisburg (18-8, 5-1 United East) and SUNY Morrisville (16-9, 4-2 United East) in two crucial conference matches. The first match begins at noon. 

The Bison will no longer make-up its match with Marymount (Va.) University on Nov. 2., it has officially been cancelled.
