Gulf Shores Bound! Sand Devils Make NCAA Tournament

TEMPE – For the first time in program history, Sun Devil Beach Volleyball is headed to the NCAA Tournament after being selected as an at-large bid as the No. 12 seed. Arizona State will begin on May 5 against No. 5 seed Cal Poly in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

The first round matchup against Cal Poly will be on Friday at 11 a.m. EDT/8 a.m. MST on ESPNU. The winner will face the victor of the dual between No. 4 seed Florida State and No. 13 seed Washington on Saturday, also at 11 a.m. EDT. The full bracket can be viewed on the NCAA’s website here

The 2024 season has been one milestone after another for Arizona State and first-year Sun Devil head coach Kristen Rohr. The team is 21-9, which is tied with the 2019 team for the most wins in program history. Of those 21 wins, 11 were against ranked opponents, which is the highest number of ranked wins in a single season in team history. ASU began the season 6-0, which was the best start the program has seen and was tied for the longest winning streak in team history.

One Sun Devil pair has been together all season: senior Taryn Ames and graduate Lexi Sweeney. They are 20-9 together, which is tied for the fourth-most by an ASU pair in a single season. In their careers, they’re tied for third for career individual wins with 61. At the Pac-12 Championships last week, they were named to the all-tournament team, the fifth pair to do so in team history.

The team leader for wins is freshman Ava Williamson, who is 24-6 this season. Not far behind her is sophomore Arden Besecker with a 22-6 record. In the single season records at Arizona State, Williamson is in third for wins and Besecker is tied for sixth. For the first half of the year, these two were paired together on court two and earned a Pac-12 Pair of the Week nod.
