Hokies drop 3-0 match to Duke Sunday afternoon


DURHAM, NC —The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to the Duke Blue Devils in straight sets (12-25, 13-25, 20-25) Sunday on the road at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The loss dropped Virginia Tech’s record to 12-13 overall and 2-12 in ACC play.

Ava Francis finished with six kills on the day to lead the Hokies attack and 10 digs from Iliana Rodriguez to led Virginia Tech defensively.

» Hailey Pearce had a team-high one ace in the loss.

» Ava Francis had a team-high six kills for Virginia Tech.

» Virginia Tech got a team-high 10 digs from Iliana Rodriguez.

» Virginia Tech attackers were helped by a team-high 16 assists from Hanna Borer.

» Virginia Tech had five attackers with at least four kills. 

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hokies fell behind early, dropping a tough first set 25-12. Virginia Tech trailed by as many as 13 points as Duke never gave up the lead in a set that was knotted up just once before the Blue Devils took control.

SET 2 | Virginia Tech fell in the second set 25-13, digging a 2-0 hole in the match. Virginia Tech trailed by as many as 12 points as Duke grabbed the advantage for good at 9-8 in a set that was tied up three times before the Blue Devils took over the lead.

SET 3 | Virginia Tech couldn’t prolong the match and lost in set number three. The Hokies fell behind on the first point and never took the lead before losing the set 25-20.
