Home Tournament Sees Bright Spots For Sand Devils


TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Beach Volleyball hosted a fall pairs tournament on Saturday, which saw three Sand Devil pairs advance to the semifinals and the team gain more experience against teams from Grand Canyon and Arizona.

The No. 1 pair of senior Lexi Sweeney and junior Taryn Ames made it to the semifinals in the 1s/2s bracket. Their big win of the day came against the top pair from Arizona. ASU’s No. 3 pair senior Sarah Waters and junior Ivey Weber won two matches today to make it to the semifinals in the 3s/4s bracket. 

Newcomers made a splash today as well. Freshmen Adriana Nieves Papaleo and Carys Thomas were the No. 5 duo and made the semifinals in the 4s/5s bracket. Another freshman in Kendall Whitmarsh won her first match of the day with senior Shane Burleson

GCU won the three top brackets and Arizona won the 7s/8s bracket.

The last fall tournament is at Grand Canyon next weekend, November 5-6. Additionally, one Sand Devil pair will be competing at the AVCA Fall Collegiate Beach Championships in Huntsville, Alabama from November 4-6.
