HOSTS INDONESIA CLAIM TOP SPOT IN POOL A WITH DEFEAT OF PHILIPPINES

Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 20, 2023 – Hosts Indonesia staged their second straight-set win in the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Women by defeating Philippines 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-10) on Tuesday evening.

Spectators at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium reveled in excitement seeing the home team climb to the top of Pool A, and into a good position going into the cross-over Classification.

Megawati Hangestri Pertiwi, who scored 13 points in the victory, was delighted to have performed well in front of the volleyball-loving public in East Java’s Gresik City.

“We are always happy to play in front of the home crowd. It gives us much energy when they cheer for us that’s why we always give our best,” she said.

The hosts comfortably played in system, posting high levels of efficiency in both offense and defense. They were passing well enough to activate their middle and wing attack. When their opponents managed to play along in transition, they stood with such strong frontline defense with an equally able second line in the backcourt. It was a nearly complete armory that they brought into the match.

The Philippines showed moments of brilliance as they crafted their plays well from the flank, so long as they succeeded in serve-reception. They also gallantly tried to enlist tight blocks, which they successfully converted upon in several plays.

The Indonesian side mostly succeeded with their strategic service, while their opponents lagged with miscues, not only from the service line, but also in attack. As the match progressed, the hosts grew more comfortable in crafting a wide variety of plays, running their combinations. As their momentum augmented, head coach M. Alim Suseno brought in his second unit, who managed to protect the lead, gifting the crowd with a sweet sweep at home.

Indonesia will face Australia in the Classification match as the main event on Wednesday at 19:00, while Philippines play India in the earlier match at 16:30. All times local .
