Huskies Host Arizona, Honor Seniors In Friday’s Apple Cup

SEATTLE — Senior Night and the Boeing Apple Cup are a couple things for the Huskies to be thankful for this week. That comes on Friday night, as Washington hosts the 11th-ranked Cougars in the regular season finale. But first, the Huskies look to set the table against the Arizona Wildcats this Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Alaska Airlines Arena. If the Huskies (15-14, 6-12 Pac-12) are to maintain a hope of an NCAA tourney bid, both matches are must-wins. Wednesday’s match will be live stream only while Friday’s will be televised on Pac-12 Networks Washington.

Before Friday’s 7 p.m. showdown with Washington State, the Huskies will honor four seniors: Kayce Litzau, May Pertofsky, Grace Zilbert, and Maeve Griffin, who is a senior academically though not in athletic eligibility. Over four thousand tickets are already sold for the Boeing Apple Cup Series, so it’s sure to be an electric atmosphere for the final match in Hec Ed this year.

Litzau, Pertofsky, and Zilbert all came to Washington through the transfer portal for their senior seasons, and have all been big contributors this fall. Litzau, who came from Wichita State, has seen her most consistent playing time over the past several weeks, as UW has gone to a two-setter rotation. 

Pertofsky the Michigan transfer has been a consistent offensive and defensive force all year, leading the team in kills in eight matches this year and ranking second with a 2.91 kills per set average, and first on the team with a .287 attack percentage. Her 0.78 blocks per set are also second on the team. 

Zilbert, who came in from Portland, has been a stabilizing force in the back row, helping with UW’s serve-reception in both a defensive specialist and libero role. She is third on the team this season with 26 aces and fourth with 191 digs.

Griffin, in her fourth year out of Gig Harbor, has seen her most playing time this season, appearing in 64 sets and notching 10 aces in a serving sub role. She also has played consistently on the Husky beach volleyball team.
