Providing my perspective from the Big Ten “Big Life Series” trip to Selma and Montgomery gives me an opportunity to be the messenger from the historical leaders, activists, and heroes by continuing the conversation we always talk about having.
But instead, the trip was filled with minorities that are living through the same types of inequalities I face every day as well. So, the compassionate feeling of community and understanding of one another didn’t need to be explained. But all of us were hit with the harsh reality that Black people during the civil rights era happened not too long ago.
Throughout Alabama, from Montgomery to Selma, the area was filled with history that waved over all of us recognizing parts of our ancestors being passed to the next generation to always remember where we came from.
