Manila, Philippines, May 23, 2024 – Thursday’s schedule of matches saw India, Philippines, Hong Kong China and Vietnam with victories to wrap up Day 2 of competition at the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women.
In Pool A, India defeated Chinese Taipei in straight sets 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-16).
Soorya (15 points) and Anusree Kambrath Poyilil (13 points) emerged on top of the scoreboard to help bring India to their second win in the Manila meet.
Also in Pool A, host team Philippines powered a 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21) against Australia, in front of nearly 6,000 spectators at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Anne Angel Canino (17 points), Ejiya Laure (17 points), Cherry Ann Ronda (16 points) and Thea Gagate (11 points) exploded with double-digit markers in the victory.
Meanwhile in Pool B, Hong Kong, China captured straight sets 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-19) against Indonesia in Thursday’s opening match in Manila’s Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Rookie Shum Lam (18 points) and Chim Wing Lam (17 points) charted stellar performances with double-digit markers for Hong Kong, China’s first taste of victory in the competition.
Later, Vietnam picked up their second victory in Pool B after sealing a straight-sets match, 3-0 3-0 (25-8, 29-27, 25-10) against Singapore.
The titleholders dominated the scoring charts, tallying 44 attacks, 9 service aces and 5 blocks.
The Preliminary Round continues until Sunday, May 26 in order to determine the rankings before heading into the semi-finals on Tuesday, May 28.
Finals are set on Wednesday, May 29 where the champion team will proceed to compete in the Volleyball World Challenger Cup, scheduled from July 4-7, 2024 in Manila.
