INDONESIA COLLECT ANOTHER WIN AT HOME IN AVC CHALLENGE CUP

Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 21, 2023 – Home team Indonesia keyed another straight-set win on Wednesday evening, taking 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-16) against Australia in Pool E of the  2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Women.

The electrifying crowd at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium in Wednesday evening’s main event roared in unison as they witnessed the hosts’ third consecutive victory in the competition.

Megawati Hangestri Pertiwi delighted the crowd with her performance, bringing in 18 points from 15 attacks and 3 blocks. Mediol Stiovanny Yoku likewise contributed with 13 markers to help steer the home team to sweep the opponents.

The hosts tried to employ power in their service, which helped set the pace and tone of the match. Outside hitter Ratri Wulandari also helped much in both attack and backcourt coverage, but she also set off 5 service aces, out of the team’s 11 service winners charted throughout the match.

“For sure we are happy with the result today of winning, but it seems that we played better yesterday (against Philippines). I think we made too many errors today,” admitted Mediol Stiovanny Yoku.

Indeed, the error count was rather unusual for a team if Indonesia’s quality, as they gave away 21 points, is miscues.

Still, head coach M. Alim Suseno believes in the roster that he had brought in for the AVC Challenge Cup.

“We have a very careful selection process in order to come up with the composition of the team. I think we have assembled the best team possible to play here at home,” he said.

Australia head coach Russell Borgeaud commented “We came into the match just trying to improve from our previous one with India, but Indonesia are at another level of the game. They are playing very good volleyball. They have excellent hitters, and the result was quite evident tonight. It was a good lesson for our team.”

Pool E will conclude on Friday, June 23, as Indonesia face India at 19:00, while Australia play the Philippines in an earlier match at 16:30. All times local
