World champions Iran and hosts Egypt will contest the 2023 World ParaVolley Sitting Volleyball World Cup final, following their victories over Ukraine and Germany in Cairo on Thursday.
The reigning world titlists ripped the chances of Ukraine with a from-the-front 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-22) victory in the first semifinal.
The home team pushed their winning streak to four and continued their climb to the final match by stopping Germany 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 25-18) in the second final four match.
In other classification matches, China and Brazil will battle for fifth and sixth places after their respective triumphs against Iraq 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-9) and Japan 3-1 (21-25, 25-12, 25-6, 25-16).
Rwanda won both their matches on Thursday against African rivals Algeria 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-16) and Great Britain 3-0 (25-9, 25-17, 25-11), while France bested India 3-0 925-11, 25-11, 25-19).
The classification matches will continue, while the four medal contenders will have a break on Friday. The medal matches will be played on Saturday, November 18.
In the women’s tournament, Brazil, Canada, China and Germany sealed their semifinal places at the women’s World Cup.
China opened the quarterfinal stage with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-14) win over Ukraine, followed by Germany’s four-set win against European rivals Slovenia.
The Germans went down in the opening set and fought of a tight second stanza battle with a two-point winning margin. They managed to keep Slovenia with a bigger lead in the next two frames to claim their semifinal spot.
In the other quarterfinal matches, world champions Brazil beat Rwanda 3-0 (25-15, 27-25, 25-14), while Canada outplayed hosts Egypt 3-0 (25-11, 25-5, 25-18).
On Friday, China and Brazil will play the first semifinal at 12:00 local time, followed by the second semifinal featuring Canada and Germany at 14:00.
The World Cup is a Paris 2024 Paralympic qualifier, where one berth per gender is available for the winner or the highest placed non-qualified team of the tournament.
Ten teams have qualified so far for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, including France (M and W) as hosts, world champions Iran (M) and Brazil (W), Asian champions Kazakhstan (M) and China (W), European champions Bosnia and Herzegovina (M) and Italy (W), and Pan American champions Brazil (M) and United States (W).
