CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Fighting Irish complete their weekend sweep with a four set win over the Boston College Eagles (29-27, 25-21,13-25, 25-23) on Sunday, Oct. 9. Despite trailing early in today’s sets, the Irish were focused in on their efforts and were able finish the weekend 2-0.
The Irish were led by Avery Ross with 10 kills and a .368 hitting percentage, followed by Lauren Tarnoff with nine kills and Kaylyn Winkler and Avery Ross who chipped in eight kills a piece. Winkler also finished with eight blocks while Tarnoff finished with seven blocks, and Charity McDowell wasn’t far behind as she finished with six blocks. Phyona Schrader dished out 36 assists and Hattie Monson tallied 27 digs.
Set One
It was an even 10-10 to start set one, but a run from the Eagles gave them an 18-13 advantage. Kills from Lauren Tarnoff brought the Irish within three at 18-16 and Notre Dame brought it within one at 20-19. While the Eagles extended the lead to 23-20, the Irish weren’t going anywhere. Down 24-22, Kaylyn Winkler sent one home for the Irish and Paris Thompson and Tarnoff had a block at the net to make it an even 24-24. Tied at 26-26, a Tarnoff kill made it 27-26, but the Eagles responded with a kill of their own to make it 27-27. A kill from Avery Ross and a Boston College attack error secured the set one win for the Irish 29-27.
Set Two
Boston College was able to take the 6-1 lead to start the second, but the Irish brought it within two at 11-9 and a Notre Dame 4-0 run would give the Irish the 13-11 advantage. It was an even set yet again at 18-18, but a kill from McDowell gave the Irish the lead. A 3-0 run from Notre Dame made it a 22-19 set and while the Eagles brought it within one at 22-21, the Irish would close out the set with three straight points to win 25-21.
Set Three
The Irish trailed early at 13-4 to start the third, but a 5-0 run from Notre Dame brought it within four at 13-9. Boston College extended their lead to 21-9 and despite the Irish’s efforts, the Eagles took set three 25-13.
Set Four
The fourth was tied at 3-3 to start, but a 8-1 run from the Eagles gave Boston College the 11-4 advantage. The Eagles had an eight point lead over the Irish at 16-8, but a block from Winkler and McDowell sparked a 7-0 run for the Irish to make it a one point set. It was all tied up at 20-20, 21-21, 22-22, but a block from Thomson and McDowell would give the Irish the final point to take home the fourth 25-23.
