Italian teams win openers at Euros > World ParaVolleyWorld ParaVolley

The Italian men’s and women’s teams launched their campaigns for the continental titles and the Paris 2024 quotas with victories in the 2023 Sitting Volleyball Men’s & Women’s European Championships at Palamare Valter Vicentini in Caorle, Italy, on Monday.

In the women’s tournament, the hosts limited Türkiye in single digits to win in straight sets. Francesca Bosio and Eva Ceccatelli scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, to give the Italians the edge in Group A standings ahead of the Germans, who opened the women’s competition with a 3-0 win over Croatia.

Slovenia and Ukraine prevailed on the first day in Group B with straight-set wins over Poland and Great Britain, respectively.

The Italian men closed Day 1 of the men’s competition with a thrilling tie-break triumph over Lithuania. After posting an opening set win, the hosts dropped the next two frames and then recovered in the fourth to stay in contention in the match.

The hosts had a down-to-the-wire finish, beating the visiting side with a 16-14 margin.

Latvia also survived its five-setter encounter with Serbia after the first six matches in the men’s fixture were decided in 3-0 scorelines.

Powerhouses Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany both completed their two matches in dominant fashion to claim Group A and Group B leadership, respectively.

Croatia joined Italy with a tick on the win column to trail Bosnia and Herzegovina as second and third in Group A, while Ukraine and Latvia are behind Germany in Group B. Ukraine won their only match of the day, while Latvia had to settle for a split win and loss in their two matches.
