Pasig City, Philippines, August 22, 2022 – Japan secured their second win in Pool B of the preliminary round of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women, with Monday morning’s 3-0 win (25-22, 25-22, 25-22) against Chinese Taipei.
Outside hitter Yuki Nishikawa led the Japanese side with 11 points all made on attack. Chinese Taipei captain Chang Li-Wen scored 16 points in the loss.
Chinese Taipei proved to be a team that could orchestrate their offense well. Captain and opposite Chang Li-Wen and outside hitter Chen Tzu-Ya connected well from the flanks. The team played well in transition given their good floor coverage and passing.
Japan prepared well to play against their opponents by showing their quality in nearly each aspect of the game. They endured to play along the rallies as they had equally good floor defense to set-up their counter-attack.
The Japanese side also utilized their first line of defense. Knowing how efficient their opponents could get by the wings, they lined up their blocks to convert to points.
Nishikawa was the main option by the wing, but Japan captain and setter Mika Shibata showed variety and depth in her orchestration.
‘We are improving little by little. There are still some things to improve though. However, we were able to do two types of offense: the fast type of offense and the slower type to calm down,” Shibata said.
The Chinese Taipei side activated their middle attack and improved their play to lead in the third set.
Japan were quick to address by employing their contrasting options in offense, to surge with momentum for the straight-sets win.
Japan will resume play on Thursday, August 25, as they play Australia at 13:00 local time.
Chinese Taipei will face Australia in the opening match on Tuesday, August 23 at 13:00 local time.
